Palo Alto University Hosts Town and Gown Luncheon on Mindfulness

Presentation: Mindfulness: Practice, Research and Growing Popularity

Held at the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel on November 10, 2015

A series of presentations, geared to help attendees understand how they can use the latest tools and techniques in mindfulness to help reduce stress, whilst increasing mental and physical well-being.

Taking place at the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel on Tuesday November 10, 2015, the presentations began with an introduction to mindfulness research and practice from Dr. Lynn C. Waelde, Professor of Palo Alto University.

An Introduction to Mindfulness Research and Practice

Dr. Waelde's clinical research focuses on therapeutic applications of meditation and predictors/manifestations of stress disorders. Her research has addressed the effectiveness of meditation for people facing diverse health and mental health issues.

Dr. Waelde is the founder and director of the Inner Resources Center of the Kurt and Barbara Gronowski Psychology Clinic of Palo Alto University. Center staff conduct psychoeducational programs, clinical interventions, professional training, and research concerning the applications of mind-body therapies. A particular emphasis is placed on meditation, for mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Mindfulness Training in China

The day's second presentation will be given by Dr. Tong Hui-Qi, Staff Psychologist and Director of Women's Mental Health at San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC).

Dr. Tong is also Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California's School of Medicine and her current clinical research is concentrated around trauma, mindfulness, women's mental health and global mental health.

As a passionate program developer, Dr. Tong is driven to deliver high-quality, western-developed mental health training programs to non- western education and training systems.

Civic Mindfulness

The presentations were rounded off by Professor Ronald Purser, who will talk about Civic Mindfulness. Dr. Purser is professor of management in the College of Business at San Francisco State University.

Professor Purser is co-author and co-editor of the books, 24/7: Time and Temporality in the Network Society (Stanford University Press, 2007) and Creativity in Organizations, (SAGE Publishing 2009).

His 1998 book, The Self Managing Organization, was selected as one of the Top Ten Management Books by the Management General mega-website.

Professor Purser's research has been featured in such places as Fortune, The Washington Post, and Training magazine. His guest editorial article, 'Shallow versus Deep Organization Development and Environmental Sustainability', appeared in the Journal of Organizational Change Management and won the 1995 Best Paper Literati Club Awards for Excellence
