Aging, Neuropsychology, and Depression Research Lab

This research lab focuses on the research areas of Aging, Neuropsychology and Depression (AND). In particular, the research will involve integrating different areas of research to provide a more “holistic” study of cognitive and affective disorders. In addition, I am very open to talking with students with other research topics in these general areas. Thus, the research studies conducted in the lab changes depending on the interests of the students. The research projects will allow the students to gain research skills from designing a study, literature reviews, recruiting subjects, administering tests and interviews, data entry and data analyses, presenting at professional conferences, and possibly writing manuscripts. Students will also be encouraged to conduct their own research project and compete for student awards, fellowships, and grants.

This training is aimed to help the student because a more independent researcher by the time he/she/they advance for dissertation.

In turn, my students have published in peer reviewed journals; written book chapters and encyclopedia entries; won APA awards in in research including: “Relationships between ACTH Levels and Verbal Memory Scores in Depressed Patients and Healthy Controls” (2011 APA Division 40: Best Female Student Poster Award); “Ethnicity Effects on Objective and Subjective Measures of Cognition in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders” (2013 APA Division 40: Student Award in Cultural Neuropsychology); and “Infancy markers of cognition predict young adult intelligence in low-income African Americans” (2015 APA Division 40 Best Student Research Award); and “Long term memory associated with sentence repetition as a predictor for reading comprehension” (2016 APA Division 40 Blue Ribbon Award for Student Research).

What we have been doing in research:

Geropsychology. My research in aging includes topics such as memory, psychiatric disorders, mental health attitudes, and minority stress. For instance in my research group at PAU, we examined how cognition and psychotic symptoms in geriatric schizophrenics affect their daily life activities. We have also examined how personality and acculturation affects attitudes about aging in various ethnic groups. We are collaborating with co-PI Dr. Peter Goldblum on a study entitled “Predictors of Psychological Distress in Older LGB Adults.” This study examined the outcome measures related to psychological distress: depression and suicide ideation, substance abuse and anxiety. Several presentations, dissertations, and publications were and are still coming from this study. Recently, we completed a project entitled Palo Alto University Age-Inclusivity across Undergraduate and Graduate Programs funded by the Gerontological Society of America which assess the needs of older students, faculty and students. Currently, we received funding through the APA CODAPAR Interdivisional Grant Award: Putting Age-Friendly Principles into Practice: Supporting and Engaging Later Stage Career Psychologists in APA. Other more empirical studies in older adult populations include looking at factors that include older adult mental health and wellbeing as well as health protocol behaviors during the Covid pandemic.

Neuropsychology. My research in neuropsychology is combined with my other research interests such as in aging and mood disorders. My neuropsychology research includes diagnosis of dementia and other cognitive disorders, cultural neuropsychology, and relationships between neurobiological factors and cognition in psychotic and nonpsychotic depression. In the past six years, I have published as co-author journal articles with PAU students and colleagues at Stanford Psychiatry Department. These articles mainly focus the neuropsychological correlates of depression and/or psychotic depression. We also have looked into the effects of cortisol and ATCH in depression and in factors of depression. More recently students have published, presented, and written dissertations on the effects of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on depression severity and cognition.

Depression. Through the collaborations with Stanford, my students and I have examined the cognitive, personality, and neurobiological correlates of depression and also particularly Psychotic Major Depression. More recently, my students are examining the effects of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on depression symptom severity and factors or types of depression symptoms.
