This one-hour online workshop will help students who are currently enrolled in local community colleges, seeking strategies to transfer into competitive universities. This workshop will consist of three main topics, with protected time toward the end to answer any individual questions. Topics of dicsussion will include:

  • Pursuing extracurricular opportunities: Participating in extracurricular activities is often portrayed as essential in transferring to a university. The workshop will discuss considerations when seeking such opportunities such as choosing meaningful activities to explore individual interests, selecting opportunities that coincide with an intended college major, and recommendations for submitting applications.

  • Building a strong CV: A CV (or resumé) is an important document often needed to apply to extracurricular activities, which often increases the competitiveness of an applicant. The presenter will discuss tips on how to build an effective CV including content, organization, and proofreading strategies. There will also be discussion regarding how to describe specific activities as more appealing universal experiences that may benefit the applicant.

  • Tips for a successful college application essay: The application (or personal statement) essay is a vital part of the transfer process. The workshop aims to briefly touch upon considerations regarding how to write a strong application essay that is genuine to the applicant and incorporates the applicant's individual strengths.

Presenting this workshop is Melina Foden, Graduate Student in the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Program.

Melina attended Foothill College and transferred to a 4-year university in 2013.
