Cambodia's Mental Health Services

We are delighted and honored that Dr. Dr Sotheara Chhim, Director of TPO, will be visiting PAU and meeting with the PAU Community in March. He will be presenting his work on Cambodia's Mental Health Services.

Speaker: Dr Sotheara Chhim.

Dr Chhim is one of the first 10 psychiatrists to qualify in Cambodia. He received the Human Rights Award from the Leithner Center for International Law and Justice, Fordham Law School, Fordham University in New York, USA. During the Killing Fields period in Cambodia, Dr Chhim was sent to a children’s detention camp and endured all the hardship that many Cambodian people suffered. Dr. Chhim received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences in Phnom Penh in 1992 and a specialist degree in Psychiatry in 1998 through a joint program between the University of Oslo, Norway and the University of Health Sciences, Cambodia. He received a Master of Psychological Medicine (MPM) from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney in 2000and in 2015, Dr Chhim received a PhD from the School of Social Sciences (Transcultural Psychiatry) from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Chhim’s research interest is in trauma and cross-cultural psychiatry. His PhD thesis is on Baksbat (broken courage), Cambodian trauma syndrome akin to PTSD.
