Directory Information Policy

The Family Educational Rights and privacy Act (FERPA) declares that an institution may release certain information from a student’s educational record without the written consent and defines Directory Information as the following: “Information contained in an education record of a student which would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed.” (1988 Final Regulations)


At Palo Alto University the following is considered Directory Information and may be released to a third party without the student’s written consent:

  • Name
  • PAU Email Address
  • Phone numbers(s)
  • Classification (i.e.  sophomore, senior, etc.)
  • Major field of study
  • Periods of enrollment
  • Degrees pursued
  • Credit hour load (i.e. full-time, part-time, etc.)
  • Degree(s) awarded
  • Date(s) of degree conferral
  • Honors
