Each year the AAAS Council elects members whose "efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.” The Council elects Fellows deliberately and carefully to preserve the honor attached to this recognition. The honor of being elected a Fellow of AAAS began in 1874 and is acknowledged with a certificate and rosette at the AAAS Fellows Forum of the annual meeting of AAAS, which this year will be in Boston, MA on Saturday, February 18, 2017. The names of the newly elected Fellows are also published in the journal Science.
