Message from President O'Connor Condemning Anti-Asian Violence

Thursday, March 18, 2021

Dear PAU Community,

Stop Asian Hate

We write to express our collective grief and outrage over yesterday’s horrific murder of eight individuals in the Atlanta area, including six individuals of the Asian community. While the investigation is ongoing, these attacks come during a time of a devastating increase of violence, xenophobia, and discrimination against members of the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community over the past year. We condemn anti-Asian violence and are committed to advancing racial justice for all.

As an institution devoted to mental health and wellness, we recognize the psychological and emotional impact of the racism, violence, and bias being exacted against the AAPI community. As I heard from students today, so many in our community are experiencing severe distress from the relentlessness of these racist attacks, and wished they had heard more directly from me and from our faculty and administrators sooner. We stand in solidarity with and support members of the AAPI community - both within PAU and beyond - and stand firmly against racism and the cruelty it produces. We must condemn anti-Asian violence but also the much more pervasive discrimination and stereotyping that has for too long and too often harmed AAPI lives and our society.

Students who may need additional support can reach out to the Dean of Students Office at studentaffairs@paloaltou.edu. One of the services we can provide is mental health support. We will explore other opportunities for services and support based on community input.

I ask that all of us extend support and grace to those who need it in their classes, their clinical work, and in other ways in which tangible expressions of support would mean so much.

In solidarity,

President O’Connor

Maureen O'Connor
