Professor Zimbardo is most well-known for the Stanford Prison Experiment that he conducted in 1971 at Stanford University. His work in social psychology to understand the factors that cause ordinary people to act in evil and horrible ways has been documented in his book, "The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil." Dr. Zimbardo is one of the most widely recognized American psychologists alive today. He is the author of one of the most popular Introductory to Psychology textbooks, "Psychology and Life" and is the host of the PBS television series "Discovering Psychology." In 2002, he was elected President of the American Psychological Association. In 2012, he received the American Psychological Association Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in the Science of Psychology. Dr. Zimbardo's current work and the work he spoke about on February 27 centers around the opposite of evil: heroism. He is the head of a new, non-profit organization, the Heroic Imagination Project (HIP), which is dedicated to promoting heroism in everyday life.

In his remarks, Dr. Zimbardo gave his audience advice about how ordinary persons can move from an egocentric view of life to a more sociocentric view, in which individuals are responsible for their peers and where each one of us can perform heroic acts by not allowing unacceptable ones to pass.
