Makiko was born and raised in Japan. She came to the United State to pursue her graduate studies in 1989. Makiko earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 1995. Makiko became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1999 and has held a variety of clinical roles working in the community: she worked as a school counselor at the Chinese American International School in San Francisco where she developed a school based counseling program and supervised MFT interns. She also worked as a bilingual clinician and clinical supervisor at the community based adult outpatient program at the Richmond Area Multi-Services in San Francisco. Makiko later joined the College of San Mateo as a clinical supervisor and program coordinator at Personal Counseling and Wellness Services in 2007. As a faculty member she is active in the campus community: she is a member of CSM CARES (promoting mental health awareness), Diversity in Action Group, Professional Development Committee; she is also an advisor to the Chinese Student Association and Active Minds Club. Makiko’s clinical work has focused on Narrative practice and trauma work. She believes that people are experts of their own life and she is interested in witnessing people’s journeys of rediscovering their life stories. 

Makiko’s personal interests include singing in professional chorus groups, traveling and exploring different cultures and food. Makiko lives with her husband, two children and two cats.
