Motivation in Severe Mental Illness and Applications for Integrated Health Care

Daniel Fulford, Ph.D.

Dr. Fulford is a clinical research psychologist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute and adjunct professor at the University of California, San Francisco. His work addresses the contributions of dysregulated motivation and emotion to functional impairment in psychopathology, focusing on individuals with severe mental illness (i.e., bipolar disorder and schizophrenia). An additional line of Dr. Fulford’s research includes applying experimental findings to develop and test integrated models of care aimed at improving outcomes for patients in general medical settings. He is currently working to better characterize mental illness based on dimensional models of motivation, as well as to increase primary care patients’ access to evidence-based mental health care.
