Palo Alto University Presentation on Police Officer Training and Use of Force Policy

Tuesday, November 1, 2016 -
6:00pm to 8:00pm
On November 1st at 6pm, Dr. Weaver will present on The Evolution of PAU’s Police Officer Training Efforts.  He will discuss local and national efforts to enhance police officer response to military veterans in crisis situations, and the development of web-based training curriculum to newly developed collaborations to address implicit bias. Dr. Weaver will present on previous and ongoing projects and future opportunities to lead efforts in police officer training.

That evening at 6pm, PAU's Forensic Mental Health and Diaspora Student Groups will co-sponsor a more focused discussion with Dr. Weaver titled Automatic Race Bias and Police Use of Force: Are psychology and the courts perpetuating unequal protection? Dr. Weaver will provide a glimpse into how police officers are trained to use force, set this training in the context of psychological understanding about race bias, and show how US Supreme Court rulings may unknowingly allow or even require problematic use of force policies. That theory will then be tested against recent data from external studies on police officer behavior in Oakland, and San Francisco, CA.  The evening will conclude with a discussion about action steps to better enhance collaboration between police and mental health fields.

Dr. Weaver has held research and clinical positions at the University of California and Stanford University. His publications include research on police officer training, and co-authored books in law, mental health and psychopathology.

Both events are free and open to the community.
