Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

Relation Insurance Services is the broker that PAU works with for SHIP.  Insurance coverage for the 2018-19 academic year is provided through Aetna.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

All full-time PAU students enrolled in residential and hybrid programs (including those programs that only require a one-week residency) are required to have health insurance and will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan (SHIP) after the waiver period unless a waiver application is submitted and approved by the established deadline dates.

There are two exception to this eligibility requirement:

  • PAU students who reside outside of the U.S. while they are taking classes or training do not qualify for SHIP and are not automatically enrolled.
  • MA in Counseling students, by the design of the program, go between full-time and part-time status while in their program.  Because of this, all MA in Counseling students are deemed eligible (even if they are not currently full-time), and are automatically enrolled in SHIP, unless studying or training outside of the U.S.

Based on the guidelines above, with the exception of those students studying or training outside of the U.S., students in the following programs qualify for, and are automatically enrolled in SHIP:

  • All Ph.D. students
  • All Psy.D. students
  • All M.A. students
  • All B.S. students in the on-campus or hybrid programs

Based on the guidelines above, students in the following programs do not qualify for, nor will they automatically be enrolled, in SHIP:

  • M.S. students
  • B.S. students in the online program
  • Non-matriculated  students

Questions about eligibility should be directed to Thom Shepard, Director of Student Services at tshepard@paloaltou.edu.

By enrolling as a student at Palo Alto University, students acknowledge that they are required to have medical insurance at all times during their enrollment. They further acknowledge that if they do not have an approved waiver currently on file, they will be responsible for paying for the SHIP charges applied to their accounts on a quarterly basis.  Details of our SHIP plan, information on the waiver procedures, and frequently asked questions are provided herein.

If you would like to self-enroll in SHIP before being automatically enrolled, you may go to Relation Insurance Portal and click on the Waive SHIP icon in the QUICK LINKS section for detailed instructions on self-enrolling.  Once enrolled in SHIP, coverage will be in effect for the remainder of the academic year. Students may submit a waiver once per year, by the waiver deadline date. Winter and Spring/ Summer deadline dates only apply to students newly enrolling for that term.
