Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

Relation Insurance Services is the broker that PAU works with for SHIP.  Insurance coverage for the 2020-2021 academic year is underwritten by Wellfleet.  This plan utilizes the Cigna, Choice Fund PPO Network as the Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).  Cigna is only involved as the network provider of choice, and cannot answer questions about your SHIP coverage.  Questions about your SHIP coverage should be directed to Relation Customer Service.

Additional Information

  • SHIP Policy*

It is the policy of Palo Alto University, as outlined in the University Catalog and Handbook, that all students enrolled in residential and hybrid programs, including those programs that only require a one-week residency, have continuous helath insurance coverage while enrolled at PAU. By enrolling as a student at Palo Alto University, students acknowledge that they are required to have medical insurance at all times during their enrollment. They further acknowledge that if they do not have an approved waiver currently on file, they will be responsible for paying for the SHIP charges applied to their accounts on a quarterly basis.

  • Eligible Students/Automatically Enrolled Students

All full-time PAU students enrolled in residential and hybrid programs (including those programs that only require a one-week residency) are required to have health insurance and will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan (SHIP) after the waiver period unless a waiver application is submitted and approved by the established deadline dates. There are two exception to this eligibility requirement:

    • PAU students who reside outside of the U.S. while they are taking classes or training do not qualify for SHIP and are not automatically enrolled.

    • MA in Counseling students, by the design of the program, go between full-time and part-time status while in their program.  Because of this, all MA in Counseling students are deemed eligible (even if they are not currently full-time), and are automatically enrolled in SHIP, unless studying or training outside of the U.S.

    • Based on the guidelines above, with the exception of those students studying or training outside of the U.S., students in the following programs qualify for, and are automatically enrolled in SHIP: all Ph.D. students, all Psy.D. students, all M.A. students, all B.S. students in the on-campus or hybrid programs.

    • Based on the guidelines above, students in the following programs do not qualify for, nor will they automatically be enrolled, in SHIP, all M.S. students, all B.S. students in the fullyonline program, and non-matriculated  students.

    • Questions about eligibility should be directed to Thom Shepard, Dean of Students at tshepard@paloaltou.edu.

  • Cost

The total cost for SHIP for the 20-21 academic year is $4,140. This is an appoximate increase of 6% from the 19-20 academic year. This is a standard increase in the student health insurance industry. The charges are split between the fall, winter, and spring quarters as follows:

  • Fall Quarter: $1,380

  • Winter Quarter: $1,035

  • Spring Quarter (includes summer 2021 coverage as well): $1,725

*Please note, PAU does not generate any revenue through SHIP. This policy is in place because of the importance of health, including mental health, to our students' success. Any money collected by PAU for SHIP is paid to Relation for students' SHIP coverage.
