Parenting Urban Adolescents Through Pervasive Loss & Trauma with Dr. Timothy Baima

Description:

Economically disadvantaged families living in urban neighborhoods experience an inordinate amount of trauma and loss. A good deal of research has focused on the experiences of adolescents in these families, finding correlations between exposure to pervasive trauma and loss, and a multitude of negative outcomes. Unfortunately, little attention has been given to the experiences of the parents of these adolescents. Family therapists are better equipped to support these families when they understand experiences common to parents as well as children. This webinar will be based on clinical experience and a qualitative dissertation designed to better understand the experience of parenting adolescents through pervasive trauma and loss in urban neighborhoods. The webinar will share experiences of parents' efforts to support adolescent children through pervasive loss and trauma. These experiences will be discussed through a variety of theoretical lenses that describe complications with grief.
